Chen Yufan 陈彧凡

Born 1973 in Putian, Fujian, Chen Yufan graduated from Fujian Normal University’s School of Art (1997) and completed his postgraduate studies at the China Academy of Art (2007). Currently based in Shanghai, his works detach from concrete imagery, instead enriching themselves in narrative, textual, and Eastern philosophical elements. This draws back to conceptual space of “Dao” and “Zen.”

Chen’s unique artistic practice is displayed through his interplay with elements and spaces. The works consist of planes of dots and lines, cultivating a meditative space through interactions with surfaces and objects. In his creative process, the artist develops a temporal sensorial experience through layering and repetitive actions, forming the dialogue between the artist and the materials. This process is a significant theme for Chen, to whom it resembles a form of self-experimentation.

Chen’s works are parts of the collections at White Rabbit Gallery (Sydney), Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation (Switzerland), M+ Sigg Collection (Switzerland), Long Museum (Shanghai), and Arario Museum (Seoul).
