Xu Heng 徐珩

Xu Heng (b. 1990, Chongqing, China) graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and is a member of the Chongqing Artists Association. As a prominent female artist active in contemporary watercolor and mixed media, her works have been frequently selected for major national and provincial exhibitions, earning prestigious accolades such as the Excellence Award at the 7th Chongqing Fine Art Exhibition (part of the 13th National Exhibition selection).

Her practice is rooted in micro-observations and emotional projections of the natural world. Known for her refreshing and “warm” visual language, Xu excels at capturing the most poignant moments of flora and fauna. Influenced by the humanistic spirit of Hayao Miyazaki, she integrates traditional “boneless” (mogu) techniques with contemporary textures like burnt foil and lace, exploring a micro-ecological aesthetic rich in narrative tension. She currently lives and works in Chongqing.

Xu Heng’s works are often described as “a gentle spring breeze across the face.” While her depictions of lilies and narcissi are grounded in realism, she intentionally softens color contrasts, utilizing the ethereal transparency and low saturation of watercolor to create a “dreamlike serenity.”

Her art transcends mere botanical illustration to explore the symbiotic vitality of all living things. In signature works like Life as Summer Flowers and Early Summer: Lush Woods, she employs lush, all-over compositions and delicate washes to forge a sacred connection between individual emotion and the vastness of nature. For Xu, flowers are more than vessels of beauty; they are forms of warmth and solace, designed to awaken a keen perception of the “unexpected beauty” hidden within the tapestry of modern life.

In her representative work, <Dreamy Morning Flora>, Xu Heng utilizes Peruvian lilies as a vessel, employing the textural collision of burnt foil, lace, and elegant floral clusters to freeze-frame an eternal longing for beautiful encounters. She imbues ethereal floral imagery with the weight of time, interpreting the resilient spirit of life blooming with quiet strength.
