Zhang Zheyi 张哲溢

Zhang Zheyi was born in 1975 in Guilin, Guangxi, and currently resides in Beijing and New York. He graduated from Guangxi Normal University and later from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he participated in the formation of the Desktop Research Art Group. Successfully holding solo art exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Germany, the United States, and other places, Zhang Zheyi’s joint exhibitions have reached China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, and other countries and regions. His public art piece was selected for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Japan in 2018, establishing him as one of the most active representatives of emerging artists.

His works are highly contemporary yet deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture. He skillfully integrates traditional culture into the contemporary, bridging the aesthetic timeline between the past and the future, with a strong Eastern philosophical atmosphere that prompts contemplation.

In the realm of “cross-culture,” Zhang Zheyi completes a contemporary transformation of personal memory and cultural traditions. He establishes a “personal pivot” in the rich cultural landscape, transitioning from seriousness to interest. Reflecting on the relationship between traditional culture and contemporary individuals, he believes that although tradition may seem distant, traces of it remain, and by following different clues, we can rediscover these historical traditions.

Zhang Zheyi’s public art pieces expand the boundaries of his artistic creation, allowing conceptual art to break free from traditional closed exhibition spaces and enter open social spaces directly. The audience transitions from passive observation to active participation, even interaction, forming a symbiotic relationship with the artwork, thereby enhancing the social impact of conceptual art. Works such as “Red Sea,” “A Slice of Cake,” “Second Dimension Hard,” and “Light Foster Home” undoubtedly have a unique and significant societal influence. The existence of public art enables people to form a specific social culture in urban or broader community spaces through discussions on artistic creation. The artist’s societal role has transcended mere aesthetic categories, becoming a guide for overcoming the limitations of materiality through the spirit.
